Some Day
Oh, pride
I know you well
With paths so wide
And down to hell
To avoid them all
We must be quick
To turn away
Before they stick
And we are caught
In the crafty web
Of an old deceiver
That wants us dead
But there is hope
That can be found
In good doctrine
That is sound
Not of men
That will not do
What only God
Can give to you
It starts with Him
And ends there too
Forever His
He offers you
Oh, won't you come
Or will you die
That's the question
There is no try
Only faith
"For it is God
which worketh in you
both to will
and to do
of His good pleasure."
(Philippians 2:13)
The song that inspired this post came from a movie I watched recently, called The Pride of Jesse Hallam, and it's the perfect closer for this classic.
The subject of this film is one that we all face each and every day --> PRIDE! And contrary to what the world in which we live would have us to believe, it is a killer.......not a winner:
"Pride goeth before destruction,
and an haughty spirit before a fall."
(Proverbs 16:18)
The path of pride leads straight to hell - that's the cold, hard truth. Cold like the death it will deliver, and hard to accept because it's the path we're all on when we come into this world. The Bible is crystal clear on this point - none of us are turned toward God.......we're all running away, and that's where we'll stay (and die) until we receive the gift of eternal life:
"All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one to his own way;
and the LORD hath laid on Him
the iniquity of us all."
(Isaiah 53:6)
We're the sheep - rambunctious and rebellious.
Jesus Christ is the Saviour - the only One that can save us.......from ourselves:
".......I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me."
- Jesus (John 14:6)
Much like the main character (Jesse) in this movie, we can ignore our problem (pride) and continue down the "my way" we know and have become accustomed to. But there are consequences for avoiding the confession we don't want to make - for denying the truth we don't want to hear --> WE NEED HELP!
It took a long time for Jesse to take that first step toward seeking out help for his problem, but when he did the help was there.......and it's the same with us in our spiritual walk. It's only after we take that first step of faith, asking Him for help, that we will receive it:
"Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth;
and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."
- Jesus (Matthew 7:7-8)
We all need help to overcome our sin problem, and that help can only be found in Jesus Christ. Without Him we are lost, and with Him we are saved.......it's as simple as that:
"For even hereunto were ye called:
because Christ also suffered for us,
leaving us an example,
that ye should follow His steps:
Who did no sin,
neither was guile found in His mouth:
Who, when He was reviled,
reviled not again;
when He suffered,
He threatened not;
but committed Himself
to Him that judgeth righteously:
Who His own self bare our sins
in His own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins,
should live unto righteousness:
by Whose stripes ye were healed.
For ye were as sheep going astray;
but are now returned unto the Shepherd
and Bishop of your souls."
(1 Peter 2:21-25)
We must first acknowledge that we need Him, and then know that He will help.......because He loves us:
"For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish,
but have everlasting life."
- Jesus (John 3:16)
When we accept Him, we are forever changed and set on a new path - one that we cannot walk on our own, but will.......because He is with us, and always will be:
"For it is God
which worketh in you
both to will
and to do
of His good pleasure."
(Philippians 2:13)
"That I may know Him,
and the power of His resurrection,
and the fellowship of His sufferings,
being made conformable unto His death;
If by any means I might attain
unto the resurrection of the dead.
Not as though I had already attained,
either were already perfect:
but I follow after,
if that I may apprehend that
for which also I am apprehended
of Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 3:10-12)
"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended:
but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind,
and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize
of the high calling of God
in Christ Jesus."
(Philippians 3:13-14)
When we say yes to Him, we are sealed forever. He lives in us, and He lives through us.......and always will, just as He promises to:
"In Whom ye also trusted,
after that ye heard the word of truth,
the gospel of your salvation:
in Whom also
after that ye believed,
ye were sealed
with that Holy Spirit of promise,
Which is the earnest of our inheritance
until the redemption of the purchased possession,
unto the praise of His glory."
(Ephesians 1:13-14)
And just as Billie Joe Shaver wrote, and Johnny Cash sang, we can say too:
I'm just an old chunk of coal now Lord
But I'm gonna be a diamond some day
Our children are watching us. They see more than we think they do - more than we want them to. They see our weaknesses and, more importantly, what we're doing about them.
Whose footsteps are we following?
Where do they lead us?
And when will we get there?
Some day.
